A marathon dispute to win a better deal for Glasgow school janitors ended in victory last month. The new school term began with a pay rise for 196 janitors represented by UNISON.

After 67 days of strike action in a dispute that began in February 2016, they all moved up a grade, from grade 2 to grade 3, bringing an immediate 6% pay rise worth £1,184 a year. The agreed increase was in recognition of the range of tasks they undertake.

There are also 35 new senior janitor roles at grade 4, and workers in those jobs will see their pay rise by £4,000 over the next two years.

In all, 213 posts are affected — one for each nursery, primary and ASL school — plus the filling of 12 vacancies and the creation of five relief posts.
