Employers not paying apprentices the NMW

Around one in seven apprentices in England are being paid less than the National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate.

The NMW rate for apprentices aged under 19 and those in the first year of their apprenticeship is just £3.50 an hour. Yet, according to documents obtained by the TUC through Freedom of Information requests, the government has prosecuted “fewer than five” employers who failed to pay that rate between January 2016 and June 2017.

The TUC accused the government of “failing in its duty to protect apprentices from bad bosses who exploit them”.
