Call for respect for staff

Retail union Usdaw called on customers to respect staff as shops are allowed to open. Its plea followed research showing that abuse of shopworkers doubled during the coronavirus emergency (see last issue page 13). The union also demanded non-essential retail stores should not remain open where retailers fail to follow joint safety guidance published by the union and the British Retail Consortium.

“Retailers have to publish risk assessments and implement robust safety measures before they reopen and we urge employers to work with the union to ensure their staff have a proper say in that process,” said Usdaw general secretary Paddy Lillis.
