Overseas nurses suffer workplace abuse

Overseas nurses are facing racist abuse and discrimination at work, according to the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s latest annual report. Newly-registered nurses and midwives who were educated abroad have suffered racist and derogatory comments from the public as well as colleagues. Some nurses said they were undermined and undervalued by fellow professionals, while others reported crying at the end of their shifts.

The regulator’s chief executive Andrea Sutcliffe responded by calling for every nursing professional to be supported, adding that their “knowledge and skill are vital to all our health and wellbeing”.
