TUC welcomes "groundbreaking" safety charter

The TUC has described as "groundbreaking" a new 'safety reps charter' agreed between Scottish Power and its unions. The charter defines the company's arrangements for safety reps to carry out their roles. It is intended to enhance the consultation process and the training and competency standards of union-appointed safety reps.

The charter lays down the role of safety reps; the company's obligations on consultation; arrangements for the time off for union duties; the facilities the company will provide and the training reps will be entitled to. Scottish Power agreed to provide the opportunity for safety reps to attend IOSH, NEBOSH and other recognised training courses. They will be allowed time off with pay to enhance their competence.

The TUC wants to find out if other workplaces have similar documents. Details should be sent to Owen Tudor at the TUC. E-mail [email protected]
