Three pay rises in the space of 12 months, with overtime premia to remain unchanged, will see basic rates for all grades rise by £17 by next March.

A similar, two-stage nine-month deal last year put £15 on the basic rates. The new deal raises rates by £6 from July, a further £6 from November, and a further £5 from next March, with the 2003 pay deal due to be negotiated from next July. The total increase is worth up to 8.3% for the lowest grade (cleaner) and nearly 7% to a heavy goods 'trunk' driver.

Overtime premia remain unchanged, and the emphasis is on lifting basic rates in preparation for the introduction of limits on hours of work when the Working Time Regulations are extended to road haulage workers. Collection and delivery drivers also receive an increase in bonus payments worth £5 per week. Sick pay has been increased by £2 to £30 per day.
